Hello! I had no idea that so many–at least two of you right here—Kaplanians were “in”/”at” this conference! Is your institution not a private/ paid one? You have online courses in psych… how coooool! How can I work with you, too?

      Hello Dr. Manning!

It’s very nice to meet you. Do you teach English Composition, or Music Composition?

    • kbishop@kaplan.edu April 18, 2017 at 6:44 am #

Ellen glad to see you’ll be attending. I will jump in on the first Tricia and Lanie’s presentation and then I follow them. Then I can relax and just be a participant! See you around the sessions! KB

  3. tfudge@kaplan.edu March 24, 2017 at 10:21 am #

Hello, everyone! I teach online for Kaplan University, primarily master’s level IT courses, but occasionally some undergraduate courses, too. In my previous lives, I taught a wide variety of music courses at the college level, wrote for a local newspaper, and even tried to sell life insurance and investments (series 6/63 and no, I will never try that again). My heart is in teaching.

This is my 10th year of attending TCC! We always learn new things and I am looking forward to April.

  4. lbattista@kaplan.edu March 28, 2017 at 10:39 am #

My focus is on early childhood (literacy development, teaching science, math & social studies, curriculum development, etc.), but I also have experience teaching in elementary school and working with older students and those with special needs. I’m looking forward to a wonderful conference an excited about being a presenter this year!

Greetings everyone! I am a Baptist pastor (for nearly 40 years) and have been involved in theological education (online and face to face) for about 20 of those years. I taught most recently for Palmer Theological Seminary. (Marney, I live in Royersford PA. Is that close to you?) I have recently graduated to “geezer” status and have the Medicare card to prove it. I’m not quite retired but I can see it from here. I have been attending TCC conferences for about 15 years now, enjoying the interactions and the learning every year.

  31. urao@hawaii.edu April 17, 2017 at 12:18 pm #

Aloha! My name is Umesh Rao. I worked for 25+ years working in the semiconductor industry, for Intel Corporation and ON Semiconductor. I hold multiple graduate degrees in Electrical Engineering and Systems Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology and Case Western Reserve University. I am now pursuing graduate studies in Learning Design at the University of Hawaii, department of Education. I see learning as an indicator that corporations will leverage to evaluate the well being of their employees and the health of their organization, in their future. Learning is the antidote to changing business conditions and the task of the management is to ensure learning thrives among the employees and the greater organization. “Changing to learn, learning to change”, precisely.

Looking forward to sharing in your learning, at this online conference.

  33. emilian@kaplan.edu April 17, 2017 at 2:48 pm #

    Hello everyone!

My name is Evelyn I. Milian. I work as an adjunct instructor of biological sciences at several colleges and universities, including Kaplan University Online. You probably know how adjuncts have to juggle work in different places to make a living. I also work as a tutor at the Kaplan University Science Center online. My specialty is microbiology. I love teaching, but I would like to do some part-time research in the field in the near future, preferably on wildlife ecology or something close to it. I have been living in Colorado since 2012 where I plan to live the rest of my life close to nature. I am from Puerto Rico, a United States territory in the Caribbean region. In 2005 my husband and I moved to Plantation, Florida looking for new adventures and better jobs. From 2009 to 2012 we lived in Houston, Texas as a transitional step to get to Colorado. I love being close to nature and wildlife, so I’m trying to be a more avid outdoor enthusiast.

I hope to learn as much as possible in this online conference, but my time to attend is very limited, so I’ll have to choose one or two sessions only.

    Best to all,

    Evelyn

Aloha, My name is Deborah Thigpen. I am exciting about learning with you all during this conference. I teach the business capstone class at Kaplan University. I am a native of Cleveland, Ohio currently living in Houston, Texas. In moving to Houston, I have traded my snow boots for cowboy boots and riding a snow blower to riding a horse. I have 10 years of corporate experience and 10 years of teaching experience in addition to being an entrepreneur. My philosophy of teaching begins with my personal mission statement: I am a visionary. I will serve my organization’s needs. I will lead and be accountable; I will create, not destroy. I am a force for good. I will give back to my community. Defy the odds. Set a new standard. Step Up

  46. larry.giddings@ppcc.edu April 18, 2017 at 9:01 am #

I’ll say “Aloha!” and by that I mean “Howdy” from Colorado Springs. I’m Larry, a long time English Faculty at Pikes Peak Community College and a long time online instructor.

Our 13 college (including a separate ONLINE campus) system has a somewhat uniform curriculum in terms of stated outcomes, and our integrated reading and writing curriculum incorporates an acceleration component to developmental English (math too) under which students may place into one semester of pre-college IRW, concurrent enrollment in first year reading and composition and a support course, or stand alone first year reading and composition.

Honestly, my (and our) online attrition rates are troubling, and I hope that this conference can give me a shot in the arm and maybe a few ideas to help me help more of my online students persist and succeed.

Looking forward to the next three nights!
    Gidd

    Hello everyone!

I’m Robert Bass from Ashford University, where I’ve been doing online teaching (mainly in philosophy) since 2012. I’m glad to have the opportunity to be involved in the TCC conference. My first online teaching experience was with University of Phoenix in 2006, and since then, I’ve talked for five different institutions. I love online teaching, both for the opportunities that it can make available to nontraditional students and also for the personal rewards of not being tied to a specific campus or commute. I’m looking forward to what I can learn from this conference.

    Helloha !
I am Katherine Watson (yes, the “other” Dr. Watson…) in California. I have been teaching for at least as long as our geezer-status Pastor, mentioned above, has been, at first traditionally (before onlinery existed), then via television, and now online. I teach almost exclusively French language and culture classes now, in person and online, at six different places. That is life part-time, where everyone gets a part. I have taught, historically (!): Anthropology, English (lit and composition), linguistics, and English as a Foreign Language (I do not call it “second”, because it is one of very many for many), as well as things French. I have participated in every one of the Tcc Conferences….Mahalo to you Hawaiians for finally getting me “in” here this time. FYI or not… i prepared for my today’s presentations by swimming 1k butterfly and another couple of k various other strokes… gotta keep wet.
