Learning Game Design Characteristics through the Study of Flow and the Elemental Tetrad in the World of Warcraft & Minecraft

Session Description
Educational games rarely achieve popular acclaim and learners may find them less engaging. This mixed methods study examines the Flow Model by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and the Elemental Tetrad Model by Jesse Schell and analyzes their intersections to assess the learning game design characteristics found in two popular commercial games: the World of Warcraft and Minecraft. This pilot study evaluated these characteristics to assess the insights from a group of experts and gamers and to identify additional characteristics that are important in learning game design.
